Chemical peels work by exfoliating the outer layers of skin, removing dead cells and revealing fresh new cells underneath. It is a much deeper exfoliation than that of typical exfoliating creams and also help to stimulate the body’s own natural collagen production and can improve elasticity. Removing the outer layers of dead skin with a chemical preparation, allows new skin cells to come through revealing a dramatically smoother and brighter complexion with fewer imperfections. Naturally derived acids loosen the glue-like attachments or cellular cement that is characteristic of many skin conditions such as ageing, acne, skin discolouration and coarse texture.

Chemical Peels can vary in depth from very superficial to very deep. Post treatment care for chemical peels is dependent on the type of peel, and condition of the skin. Some peels are so superficial that they cause little to no peeling, and may not require a big change in your skin care regimen. Having a deeper level chemical peel provides a greater level of correction, however it also can create a greater risk for complications. Most complications can be avoided by strict patient compliance, meaning you should follow your post treatment care instructions exactly as instructed. Deeper peels may also require preconditioning, this especially important for darker skin types.

One of the most important things to remember after a chemical peel is to avoid picking, scrubbing or assisting the peel in any way. Treat the skin like you are trying to keep it on. The old dead skin that is about to peel off acts as a protective barrier. If you have caused the skin to peel off prematurely you are at increased risk for complications, including hyper-pigmentation.

After a chemical peel your skin is more vulnerable to Ultra Violet Rays. You should avoid sun exposure as much as you can, hats and sunglasses are helpful as well as an SPF50.
Generally, cosmetics such as foundation, concealer and powder are not recommended after resurfacing procedures and chemical peels.
Avoid sun exposure as much as possible post treatment for a minimum of 3 days.
Wear SPF50 daily for a minimum of 7 days and re apply often.
Avoid excessive heat for 7 days post treatment ie saunas steam rooms.
Do not go swimming for 7 days after your treatment as chlorine can be an irritant.
Avoid Facial waxing for 7 days post treatment.
Do no pick, scratch or excessively rub the treated area.
Do not use any scrubs, face polishes or exfoliators for 7 days post treatment.
Avoid any AHA/BHA chemical exfoliators for 7 days post treatment.
Avoid active ingredients such as vitamin c for 5 days minimum.
You may experience slight redness post treatment which should subside within 24 hours.
